As a first stab at why youth face problems in the transition from high school to university, we might have to first take a look at what high schools do to prepare students for what is to come. I remember being a grade 12 student, and as I reflect now, having all the wrong goals when approaching my undergraduate university career. No one was there to mentor me and show me that not only was it okay to be anxious, but also to help me steer clear of roadblocks.
At Building Blocks, we are striving to acknowledge the unique needs of each student and their background/community. With this in mind, we want to be that flashlight for many incoming undergraduate students, navigating in the dimly-lit path of university and, ultimately, life.
From our own experiences as students, we came up with the concept that is now Building Blocks. As a three pronged approach, we plan on creating an app that will use an innovative algorithm to match incoming university students with upper-year students for mentorship, train students as peer mentors, and provide a chat function so students can stay connected.
Here, we'll be posting regular updates on our app development. Check in to see our progress and where we're heading next!
